Marriage is not what you see in movies and telenovelas, it takes work - Sam George

Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, Samuel Nartey George has opined that marriage is a verb and requires work, however, the fictionalization of marriage in movies has brought about a culture of impatience.

The politician who recently celebrated 11 years of marriage with his beautiful wife, shared some gems he has picked up along the way in an interview with Berla Mundi on the “Day Show.”

According to Sam George, marriage is work, and any two people who decide to take the step should be willing to work towards sustaining their relationship.

“11 years with my wife has been a good journey, marriage is work but it is a good exercise and it is a good enterprise especially when you are with the right person,” he told Berla Mundi.

Sam George who is leading the charge against of the legalisation LGBTQ+ activities in the country, opined that marriages as portrayed in telenovelas have given people the wrong idea about what the institution entails.

“Marriage is not a noun, it is a verb, people watch too much telenovelas, movies have taught us a certain culture of impatience, no two people can live together without issues but the movies we have imported, and that is one thing the LGBTQ people are doing with the movies.

“I’ll take it back a bit, in 2021 when I went to the university in Kumasi, if anyone heard someone doing money sacrifice, human sacrifice for money, it was a scary thing so we’ve been accustomed to it by the power of movies and that’s really the challenge with marriage in young couples as well, the guy does something, she doesn’t like, she calls the lawyer and he is sued, then she moves on and meet another guy and that is not real life, movies are scripts, unreal”, he said.

Sam George further added that people have to understand that misunderstandings and hardships comes with marriage, and relationships and instead of separating, they should find ways to solve the problems and move on.

“I used to free my mind and talk to my wife whenever I’m angry and what happens is, after we’ve settled it, she’ll come and use my words and now I have to apologize for saying something wrong out of freeing my mind. But what we must learn is that, even and the tongue and the teeth fight so you and your spouse will have issues but the only basis I’ll ever support from walking away from a marriage is physical and emotional abuse,” he added.
