The Recording Academy presents the Grammy Award, also known as the Gramophone Award or simply the Grammy, to honor “outstanding achievement in the music industry” in the United States. A gilded gramophone is pictured on the trophy.
The Grammys are the first major music awards show each year hosted by the Big Three networks (before the Billboard Music Awards in the summer and the American Music Awards in the fall).
Along with the Academy Awards (for achievements in film), the Emmy Awards (for achievements in television), and the Tony Awards, the Grammy is regarded as one of the four major annual American entertainment awards.
On May 4, 1959, the first Grammy Awards ceremony was held to recognize the musical achievements of performers for the year 1958. The Recording Academy changed many Grammy Award categories for 2012 after the 2011 ceremony.
